Prepping up for Istanbul

I am to turn 40 in two weeks! My love surprised me with a 4-day trip to Istanbul. As per my last post, I am to do the due diligence this time.

Location Research

The most naive approach I could think of was

  1. Do a Google image search for general impressions
  2. Do a flickr search to see some sample photographs
  3. Check out the Wikipedia article and look for 10 key aspects of the city

The Google image search yielded this:

Flickr had this to say about Istanbul:

Wikipedia takeaways:

  • One of the largest cities in Europe – home to 15 million
  • More European than Asian
  • Inhabitated for 8000 years
  • 34th richest city in the world
  • Insanely diverse culturally
  • Boomed in the last 30-50 years

Creative Vision

In bullet points:

  • On the border of Europe and Asia
  • Mosques
  • Bosporus and its bridges
  • Colors
  • Narrow streets
  • Turks
  • Bridges

Gear – easy pick this time

This warrants its own post – or series of posts – but my retro camera obsession is still at its peak, and one of the recent challenges was to build out a decent full-frame kit for less than 500 EUR. I made it under 450 and will be taking the entire set to Turkey. It has some limitations – I’ll be certainly more restricted than with a travelzoom – but far from let’s say two primes.

  • Canon 5D (Mark 1) body
  • Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 wide angle
  • Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 normal zoom
  • Tamron 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 stabilized telephoto
  • Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime
